En esta sección usted encontrará sugerencias para la selección de materiales; las cuáles le son proveidas para ayudarle, a examinar los materiales que aquí encontrará, a la luz de sus propias necesidades y preferencias. Aquí le sugerimos varias preguntas, que sería importante considerar, si usted trabaja directamente con niños y familias, si usted es padre o algún familiar buscando o utilizando los servicios o si trabaja en desarrollo del personal. Sugerencias para la selección de materiales
Si usted es padre/madre o algún familiar buscando o utilizando los servicios
Existen muchas ocasiones en las que usted está buscando materiales de apoyo para sus hijos y su familia, con respecto a:
- buscar nuevos servicios
- aprender más acerca de los servicios existentes
- encontrar formas de mejorar los servicios existentes
En la Selección de materiales revisados le proporcionamos un resumen del material, información sobre su disponibilidad, y como mínimo dos revisiones críticas realizadas por expertos. Cada revisión incluye las ventajas y limitaciones del material y si éste es apropiado o no; así mismo proporciona sugerencias para la adaptación de los materiales. La información del autor podría incluir los clientes que hasta ahora han utilizado el material y cómo fue creado. Esperamos que esta información le sirva para determinar que tanto el material satisface las necesidades de su familia e hijos. Sabemos que las familias pueden diferir de muchas formas: parentesco, valores, creencias, tradiciones, características, y roles. Le aconsejamos revisar los materiales de acuerdo con sus necesidades, preferencias y restricciones particulares. Igualmente le sugerimos las siguientes preguntas como ayuda para la selección de un material.
1.Considere los clientes.
- ¿Qué tan aproximada es la semejanza entre su familia o hijos y aquellos para los que el material fue creado? Si ve diferencias, ¿qué tan importantes son?
- ¿Contiene el material supuestos, creencias o valores similares a los de su familia?
- ¿Está el estilo del lenguaje y el dialecto de acuerdo con el de su familia?
- ¿Describe el material los roles del proveedor, familia e hijos en forma similar a los de su familia?
- ¿Tiene el tiempo, las habilidades y los recursos para utilizar este material?
2.Considere las ventajas y limitaciones del material.
- ¿Hasta que punto las ventajas, identificadas por usted y los que revisaron el material, sobrepasan las limitaciones del mismo?
- ¿Se pueden afrontar las limitaciones? En caso positivo, ver adaptaciones.
3.Considere hacer adaptaciones del material.
- Algunas veces las personas que revisan el material recomiendan adaptaciones, algunas más fáciles de lograr que otras.
Si usted pudiera realizar cambios
- ¿Qué adaptaciones le puede hacer al contenido para asegurar una "buena adaptación del material" para su familia?
- ¿Existen mejores formas, que las recomendadas actualmente, de usar o presentar información para satisfacer las necesidades de su familia?
- ¿Tiene el tiempo y los recursos para realizar adaptaciones?
Si no puede realizar cambios
- ¿Podría utilizar una parte del material y aún producir los resultados deseados?

- ¿Están incluidos en el material el tiempo, gastos y otros recursos necesarios para el uso adecuado del material?
- ¿Si el material esta en otro idioma diferente al Inglés, está el estilo del lenguaje y el dialecto de acuerdo con el de la comunidad donde presta el servicio?
2.Considere las fortalezas y limitaciones del material.
- ¿Hasta que punto las fortalezas, identificadas por usted y los que revisaron el material, sobrepasan las limitaciones del mismo?
- ¿Se pueden afrontar las limitaciones? En caso positivo, ver adaptaciones.
3.Considere adaptaciones del material.
- ¿Hasta que punto puede adaptar el material a las necesidades de sus estudiantes? Las personas que revisan el material podrían recomendar adaptaciones, algunas más fáciles de lograr que otras.
Si usted pudiera realizar cambios
- ¿Qué adaptaciones le puede hacer al contenido para asegurar una "buena adecuación" para las familias y niños atendidos por su programa?
- ¿Existen mejores formas de presentar el material a sus clientes?
- ¿Son los recursos que tiene suficientes para realizar estas adaptaciones?
Si no puede realizar cambios
- ¿Podría proporcionar un suplemento al artículo, como una carta o panfleto que ponga en evidencia sus inquietudes?
- ¿Podría utilizar una parte del material y aún producir los resultados deseados?
- ¿Podría el material servir como modelo para el desarrollo de material más apropiado?

Si trabaja en desarrollo del personal
Existen muchas ocasiones en las que podría estar buscando materiales como apoyo al trabajo de proveedores de servicios, estudiantes que realizan su práctica y participantes en cursos talleres, con respecto a:
- proporcionar instrucción directa
- aumentar sus conocimientos sobre recursos en su respectiva disciplina
- ayudarlos a mejorar sus servicios

Sabemos que los requerimientos de entrenamiento podrían diferir en varias formas, dependiendo de las características de los clientes, de los servicios que la comunidad de estudiantes provee, y de la población que ellos atienden. - ¿Si el material está en otro idioma diferente a Inglés, está el estilo y dialecto del lenguaje de acuerdo con el de la comunidad donde presta el servicio?

- ¿Sobrepasan las ventajas del material, identificadas por usted y los que lo revisaron, las limitaciones del mismo?

- ¿Hasta que punto puede adaptar el material a las necesidades de sus estudiantes? Los que revisan el material podrían recomendar adaptaciones, algunas más fáciles de lograr que otras.
Si usted pudiera realizar cambios
- ¿Qué adaptaciones le puede hacer al contenido para asegurar una "buena adecuación" para sus clientes? Por ejemplo, corresponde el contenido a sus
- necesidades de aprendizaje? Es el contenido sensible a estilos, valores y prácticas de aprendizaje culturalmente diferentes?
- ¿Existen mejores formas de presentar el material a sus clientes (Ej. Impreso o por otros medios, a través de interacciones personales, o electrónicamente)
- que las recomendadas actualmente?
- ¿Son los recursos que tiene suficientes para realizar estas adaptaciones?
Si no puede realizar cambios
- ¿Puede señalar sus inquietudes e identificar formas apropiadas de utilizar el material, a través de actividades suplementarias, discusiones, u otros materiales?
- ¿Puede la tecnología darle soporte para realizar las adaptaciones (E;. Generar discusiones a través del Web, recursos de Internet)?
- ¿Podría utilizar una parte del material y aún producir los resultados deseados?
- ¿Podría el material servir como modelo para el desarrollo de un nuevo documento, dado sus recursos actuales?

Suggestions for Choosing Materials are provided to help you examine materials in the light of your own particular needs, preferences and constraints. We suggest several questions that you may wish to consider if you work directly with children and families, if you are a parent or a family member seeking or using services, or if you work in personnel development. If you are a parent or a family member seeking or using services
There are many occasions when you might look for materials to assist you, your child, and your family:
- To seek new services
- To learn more about existing services
- To find ways to improve services
In the collection of reviewed materials we provide you with a summary of the material, information about availability, and at least two critical reviews by experts. Each review addresses the strengths and limitations of the material and when appropriate, provides suggestions for adapting materials. The developer's information may describe the clients who actually have used a material, as well as how the material was created. We hope that this information will help you determine how closely the material will match the needs of your family and child. We know that families may differ in many ways: membership, values, belief, traditions, characteristics, and roles. We encourage you to examine the materials in the light of your own particular needs, preferences and constraints. We suggest the following questions to help you in choosing a material.
1. Consider the clients.
- How closely does your family or child resemble those for whom the material was developed? If you see many differences, how important are they?
- Does the material contain assumptions, beliefs or values that are similar to those of your family?
- Does the language style and dialect match what your family uses?
- Does the material describe provider, family or child roles that are similar to those in your family?
- Do you have the time, skills and resources to use this material?
2. Consider strengths and limitations of the material.
- To what extent do the strengths of the material identified by you and the reviewers outweigh the limitations?
- Can the limitations be addressed? If so, see Adaptations
3. Consider adaptations of the material.
- To what extent can you adapt the material to meet your needs? Sometimes the reviewers recommend adaptations, some of which are made more easily than are others.
If you can make changes
- What adaptations can you make regarding content to ensure a "good fit" for your family?
- Are there better ways to use or present information to meet your family's needs, than currently described?
- Do you have the time and resources to make adaptations?
If you cannot make changes
- Can you use some but not all of the material and still produce desired outcomes?

- Are there better ways to present the material to your clients (e.g., in print or other media, in face-to-face interactions, or electronically) than currently recommended?
- Are your resources sufficient for making these adaptations?
If you cannot make changes
- Can you address your concerns and identify appropriate ways of using the material, through supplemental activities, discussion, or other materials?
- Can technology assist you in making adaptations (e.g., web-based threaded discussions, internet resources)?
- Can you use some but not all of the material and still produce desired outcomes?
- Can you use the material as a model to develop a new document, given your current resources?
